In the UK, Kent is the heart of cherry growing, and we learn about how cherries were introduced, the native varieties and how they got here, and then about cherry picking in general. It's full of anecdotes from the author, as well as serious information about cherry-based agriculture in general. All-in-all, this is a fascinating book, and a little sad, since uk cherries are now so difficult to find outside of Kent or London. I only wish the supermarkets would get wise, and stock the many interesting varieties grown in the UK. |
